Compact BAW Filters Help Separate WiMAX And WLAN

Wireless networks bring a great deal of convenience to the home, office, and factory, although available spectrum has always been a valuable commodity. In the case of wireless local area networks (WLANs) and high-speed WiMAX networks, for example, devices occupy the same general bandwidth centered at around 2.5 GHz. To keep things straight, Skyworks Solutions has developed a pair of high-performance filters based on bulk-acoustic-wave (BAW) technology. In essence, model SKY33107 passes WiMAX signals from 2.495 to 2.690 GHz with minimal loss while rejecting WLAN signals from IEEE 802.11b/g/n wireless transmitters operating from 2.400 to 2.473 GHz. Conversely, model SKY33108 passes WLAN signals with minimal attenuation while suppressing signals from WiMAX transmitters (see figure).

Model SKY33107 is designed to pass WLAN signals and stop WiMAX signals. When tested with 0-dBm signals matched to the filter’s 50-ohm ports, it shows insertion loss of typically 2.5 dB for the passband of 2.400 to 2.473 GHz, with passband ripple of typically 0.5 dB. The filter, which is designed for operating temperatures from -20 to +85°C, exhibits passband return loss of typically 12 dB and is rated for withstanding voltages to 100 V. Over the frequency band of 2.495 to 2.690 GHz, the BAW filter typical rejects WiMAX transmitter signals by 40 dB. Available in a lead-free, RoHS-compatible package, the model SKY33107 BAW filter is designed to handle maximum input signal levels to +28 dBm. The filter meets Class 1 electrostatic-discharge (ESD) requirements per Human Body Model (HBM) conditions.

Model SKY33108 is designed for use in the 2.495 to 2.690 GHz WiMAX band for transmitter applications that also contain WLAN IEEE 802.11b/g/n transmitters. When tested with 0-dBm input signals matched to the 50-ohm impedance of the filter’s ports and at room temperature (+25°C), the filter shows typical insertion loss of only 2 dB across the WiMAX transmitter passband of 2.495 to 2.690 GHz with passband ripple of typically only 0.5 dB. The passband return loss is typically 12 dB. The rejection of WLAN transmitter signals across the frequency band from 2.400 to 2.473 GHz is typically 40 dB. As with the model SKY33107 filter, the SKY33108 is rated for withstanding voltage to 100 V and has a maximum input-power rating of +41 dBm. It is also rated for Class 1 ESD per the HBM and is designed for operating temperatures from -20 to +85°C. It is also available in a lead-free, RoHS-compatible package measuring a mere 3 x 3 mm.

High-Speed ADC Offers 16 b At 200 MSamples/s

Analog-to-digital conversion plays a major role in many electronics systems, especially when signal processing is performed in the digital realm. The audio world has been accustomed to 16-b resolution at the audio standard sampling rate of 44.1 kSamples/s. But for radio-frequency (RF) signals, the road to high-resolution sampling has represented a much longer journey because of the sampling speeds needed to achieve such high resolution for RF signals. That wait is over, however, since Texas Instruments has taken the wraps off its model ADS5485 analogto- digital converter (ADC), which delivers 16-b resolution at maximum sampling rate of 200 MSamples/s. With its speed and resolution, the ADS5485 is well suited for applications in general data acquisition, medical imaging, radar systems, software-defined radios (SDRs), and in test equipment.

The ADS5485 (see figure) will aid applications in a wide range of fields, including in industrial, commercial, and military areas. It provides as much as 100-MHz differential input bandwidth for capturing input analog signals with 16-b fidelity. It has a 3-dB analog input bandwidth of 730 MHz with a differential input voltage range of 3 V peak to peak. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is 75 dB full scale (FS) for a 70-MHz analog input signal and 74.4 dB FS for a 230-MHz analog input signal. The spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) is -87 dBc for a 70-MHz analog input signal and -73 dBc for a 230-MHz analog input signal. Second harmonics are -95 dBc for the 70-MHz input signal and -73 dBc for the 230-MHz input s ignal . (Comparing this performance to other commercially available ADCs can be a challenge, but there is help in understanding differences among manufacturers as pointed out in an application note from Texas Instruments, detailed on p. 109.)

The low-noise data converter, which is based on the firm’s BiCom3 complementary bipolar process, is designed for use with a +3.3- and +5-VDC supplies, typically drawing 310 and 126 mA, respectively. It includes a power-down mode to cut power consumption to only 70 mW. The ADC provides LVDS-compatible digital output signals following conversion of input analog signals. An on-board differential input buffer amplifier provides isolation between a source and the internal track-andhold (T/H) amplifier, while an internal reference generator helps simplify system design. An internal dither circuit can be switched on or off as needed to help improve SFDR performance. The ADS5485 ADC provides outstanding accuracy, with typical differential linearity error (DNL) of only ±0.5 least significant bits (LSB) and typical integral linearity error (INL) of ±3 LSB.

Software/Scope Combination Scrutinizes Complex Waveforms

Oscilloscopes and spectrum analyzers are sometimes found on the same test bench. Each brings its strengths and limitations, with a scope’s triggering capabilities ideal for time-domain analysis and a spectrum analyzer’s sweep functions well suited for spectral displays. But what if those capabilities were combined? The answer would be the SignalVu vector signal analysis software from Tektronix, which is designed to work with the company’s DPO/DSA70000 series digital phosphor oscilloscopes (DPOs). The software transforms those high-speed scopes into signal analyzers with real-time bandwidths to 20 GHz at sampling rates to 50 GSamples/s.

The SignalVu vector signal analysis software brings real-time spectrum analyzer functionality to the DPO/ DSA70000 series DPOs, specifically, adding the capabilities of the firm’s RSA6100A real-time spectrum analyzer to the oscilloscopes. The combination provides the signal analysis functions of a spectrum analyzer with the triggering capabilities of a scope, especially useful when capturing and analyzing transient events. The SignalVu software works within the firm’s DPO7000 and DPO/DSA70000 series digital oscilloscopes, borrowing the instrument’s user interface, triggering functions, and display to show complex waveform information (see figure).

The capture bandwidth of the combination and minimum pulse-width capabilities depend upon the choice of oscilloscope, with the highest-performance model DPO/DSA72004 yielding the best performance as a signal analyzer. With SignalVu, the model DPO/DSA72004 DSO provides a maximum span of 20 GHz with minimum pulse-width detection capability of 400 ps. In contrast, a DPO7104 oscilloscope equipped with SignalVu offers a maximum span of 1 GHz and minimum pulse-width detection capability of 8 ns.

The scope/software combinations work like a spectrum analyzer, effecting Gaussian-shaped resolution-bandwidth filters in a 1, 2, 3, 5 sequence. The SignalVu-equipped scopes feature versatile display capabilities, including amplitude vs. log/linear frequency, amplitude vs. frequency over time, frequency vs. time, amplitude vs. time, and phase vs. time. Up to 5 correlated markers are available and operate across all displays. They can also optionally show tables of pulse statistics and pulse measurement results. Great minds think alike in the microwave industry as they do elsewhere. Take, for instance, the plethora of impressive synthesizers that debuted over the past 12 months. These instruments boast the outstanding switching speed, low noise, and broad bandwidths that are required to satisfy everything from automatic test equipment (ATE) to the most stringent military applications. Another theme in 2008 was integration, as many instruments and devices combined functions while shrinking the size of the package. Of course, the microwave industry produces a nearly constant stream of impressive products. These 14 were chosen because of their broad applicability across different application areas. Check out this year’s Top Product picks to see where new performance heights were reached, novel capabilities and features were included, or an industry first was made a reality (see table).

Of the long list of frequency synthesizers introduced in 2008, the four chosen here stand out in various performance areas. Anritsu’s MG37020A frequency synthesizer tunes from 10 MHz to 20 GHz with frequency switching speed of 100 s/point (January cover, p. 97). To achieve this speed, the company created an architecture based on a low-noise, voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) rather than the traditional yttriumindium- garnet (YIG) oscillator used in broadband signal generators. Yet the instrument maintains the superb phase-noise performance that is associated with YIG sources.

The January issue also spotlighted the model SMS-DU direct-digital synthesizer (DDS) from Spinnaker Microwave [p. 104]. It delivers output frequencies as high as 40 GHz in bandwidths as wide as 25 percent in an enclosure the size of a paperback book. The DDS boasts 1-Hz resolution and 1-µs switching speed.

Signal/Spectrum Analyzer Races Through Production Testing

Manufacturers of electronic equipment for wireless applications such as IEEE 802.11n, WiMAX, and Long Term Evolution (LTE) communications systems need test equipment with performance matched to these standards. The R&S FSV signal analyzer from Rohde & Schwarz fills the bill for wireless production testing, with manual speed of 500 sweeps/s and automated speed of 1000 sweeps/s.

The R&S FSV (see figure) is available in versions covering 9 kHz to 3.6 GHz or 9 kHz to 7.0 GHz, with an option for low-frequency extension to 20 Hz. Frequency can be tuned with 1-Hz resolution. The signal analyzer features a third-order intercept of +18 dBm, phase noise of –110 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset from a 1-GHz carrier, and noise floor of –155 dBm or better.

The analyzer is available with measurement packages for all major wireless standards, and has a touch-sensitive front-panel user interface that includes a “virtual” mouse and keyboard. It includes a removable hard drive and can disable its Universal Serial Bus (USB) port to prevent movement of data in secure facilities (see table).

At low frequencies, the R&S FSV employs direct digital conversion of RF signals, eliminating degradation typical of many analyzers caused by local oscillator (LO) feedthrough and phase noise. The instrument’s 16-b, 128-MHz analog-to-digital converter (ADC) digitizes the last intermediate- frequency (IF) stage in the RF signal-processing chain. It is backed by enough memory to support recording signal information at sample rates to 200 MSamples/s. The analyzer’s resolution bandwidth can be set from 1 Hz to 10 MHz as well as at 20 and 28 MHz; in addition, an option is available for 40-MHz capability in zero-span mode. The low-level measurement uncertainty is 0.3 dB to 3 GHz and 0.4 dB to 7 GHz, matching a stand-alone power meter.

USB Commands Fast Power Meter/Sensors

Power measurements once required tracking down the right sensor for connection to a benchtop power meter. LadyBug Technologies LLC has simplified matters not only by integrating the sensor with the meter, but by adding a Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface that allows a laptop or a personal computer (PC) to serve as the control center. The firm’s growing line of power meter/sensor instruments currently provides pulsed and CW power measurements across a dynamic range of -60 to +20 dBm and a frequency range of 10 MHz to 26.5 GHz.

Founded by former engineers from Agilent Technologies (itself formerly part of Hewlett-Packard Co.), Richard Hawkins and Jon Sigler, Lady- Bug Technologies LLC is built upon a practical approach to high-frequency measurements. The firm’s first series of instruments—all combination power meter/sensor models—leverage the intelligence readily available in a PC or laptop computer via the USB interface. The computer runs the control software and stores measurement results, while the power meter/sensor contains the measurement hardware required to capture power levels at RF and microwave frequencies. These PowerSensor+ integrated power meter/sensors perform temperature-corrected measurements for high accuracy over time, operating without need of “zeroing” or regular calibration before use (a one-year cal cycle is recommended by LadyBug).

The power meter/sensors cover a variety of frequency ranges, starting at 10 MHz and reaching 8, 12.5, 18, and 26.5 GHz. They provide measurement dynamic ranges as wide as 80 dB (-60 to +20 dBm). At just 1.6 x 2.25 in. (40 x 57 mm) not including the length of the connector, they are a fraction the size of competing power-measurement solutions. Although small in size, they do not skimp on performance, with fast measurement speed of 2000 settled measurements/s and recorder outputs that permit data capture. The instruments are available with a choice of connector: Type N, SMA, or TNC (except on the SMA-only 26.5-GHz unit).

Many of the PowerSensor+ integrated power meter/sensors measure the power levels of both pulsed and continuous-wave (CW) signals, allowing for pulse profiling and duty-cycle measurements along with capturing peak power levels. For example, models LB478A and LB479A operate over a frequency range of 10 MHz to 8 GHz with the capability for pulsed and CW power measurements. Model LB478A features a power measurement range of -35 to +20 dBm while model LB479A covers the widest measurement dynamic range currently offered by LadyBug Technologies: -60 to +20 dBm. Both models restrict total measurement errors to 1.95 percent or less and both offer outstanding impedance match with a device under test (DUT), with typical return loss of 27 dB (VSWR of 1.09:1).

Wideband Transistors Are Efficient To 3 GHz

Power transistors have typically traded performance for instantaneous bandwidth. Most devices show a huge drop in output power, gain, and efficiency when switching from relatively narrowband applications to circuits with wide instantaneous bandwidth, such as with pulsed RF signals. The new series of PowerBand discrete power transistors from TriQuint Semiconductor have been designed to be the exception to this rule, with excellent performance whether used in narrowband or wideband applications. These robust transistors are well suited for systems using either continuous-wave (CW) or pulsed and modulated signals, including radar, electronic-warfare (EW), and wireless communications systems.

The new line of PowerBand discrete power transistors currently includes six power transistors. As evidence of the flexibility of the PowerBand approach, the new transistors are based on two different device processes: silicon lateral diffused metal oxide semiconductor (LDMOS) and gallium arsenide (GaAs) pseudomorphic high-electron-mobility-transistor (pHEMT) technologies. The transistor covers a total frequency range of 500 MHz to 3 GHz with as much as 50 W output power at 1-dB compression at 2 GHz.

According to TriQuint President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ralph Quinsey, “PowerBand changes the wireless equation, creating an opportunity to save a tremendous amount of space, cost, and energy. Because PowerBand efficiently delivers high power across unprecedented bandwidth, an RF design may require only one transistor line-up instead of several. This fact directly impacts the bill of materials and size of end user products by substantially reducing space dedicated to RF.”

Bill McCalpin, PowerBand Co-Inventor and General Manager, TriQuint Colorado Design Center, adds that “the incredible performance of PowerBand is the first thing that evaluating engineers recognize as truly outstanding. A traditional high-power RF transistor is designed to operate across a narrow frequency range, such as 2.53 to 2.65 GHz. Within that range it delivers power relatively efficiently. But as bandwidth increases, performance falls. PowerBand is totally different in its ability to deliver high power and high efficiency performance across a much wider frequency range, from 500 MHz to 3 GHz.”

High efficiency results in less heat generated by high-power RF/microwave transmitters, and less complexity and cost in controlling and dissipating the heat that is generated. In mobile devices, higher efficiency results in longer operating time on a battery and less heat generated in portable systems. Although the PowerBand technology has been applied to silicon LDMOS and GaAs pHEMT processes for the first set of power transistors, it is also applicable to other high-power device technologies, such as processes based on silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) wafers.

For RF/microwave communications amplifiers, the two main duties have to do with strengthening low-level signals for receivers and boosting high-level output signals for transmitters. Although they differ in function, as well as in size and power requirements, both types of amplifiers benefit from continuing improvements in transistor technologies.

Depending on output requirements, amplifiers range from tiny chips to complete subsystems with digital interfaces. In general, the trend toward higher levels of integration, such as embedding an amplifier on a chip with other transceiver components, still favors small-signal designs. Large-signal or power amplifiers are still mostly designed around discrete transistors and with discrete matching components. Power transistors are simply larger than low-noise or small-signal transistors. They dissipate more heat than low-noise transistors and require larger supporting (impedance-matching, power-supply) passive circuit elements, making a power amplifier larger than a low-noise amplifier (LNA). Power amplifiers operate on current in the ampere (A) range, compared to LNAs that only require milliamperes (mA).

At one time, both microwave low-noise and power amplifier designs were dominated by their use of GaAs field-effect transistors (FETs). But the development of other transistor architectures, such as GaAs heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) and high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs), has given amplifier designers alternatives to traditional high-frequency silicon bipolar transistors and GaAs FETs for high-frequency LNAs. For power amplifiers at higher frequencies, GaAs FETs are still the device of choice. At lower frequencies, however, silicon laterally diffused, metal-oxide-semiconductor (LDMOS), silicon-carbide (SiC), and gallium-nitride (GaN) transistors offer impressive power densities.

Bone Fish Grill Restaurant

Bone Fish Grill is a new seafood restaurant. Located in the pas seafood restaurant that was already famous, that is, the Lobster Resto. Resto is designed quite interesting, with a tiny display of oil lamps on each table. When we entered, we can see the door-shaped fish restaurant, like a tuna in fact: D

Baja Fresh Mexican Grill

Romano's Macaroni Grill
